How to Prevent Food Poisoning?  

Food poisoning isn’t a rare disease. Getting ill because of contaminated food has been a common phenomenon globally. The food gets contaminated by disease-causing pathogens, and when you consume contaminated food, you can get infected with food poisoning.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Food Poisoning?

What Causes Food Poisoning?

Food poisoning is caused by infectious microorganisms such as bacteria, parasites, viruses, toxins etc., which get into your food and spoil it. Food poisoning can occur due to several factors, which are discussed here.

Temperature is one of the constituents that lead to food poisoning. The food poisoning bacteria advance in the internal temperature scale between 5°C and 60°C. So, you must ensure keeping perishable food items above or below the temperature scale to stay safe from food poisoning.

Other reasons that can cause food poisoning are food items like eggs, meat, and dairy products that include adequate nutrients for the bacteria to grow. Moreover, pH plays an integral role in controlling bacteria growth. The lower pH limits bacteria growth but food items that have a neutral pH encourage bacteria growth.

Lastly, food poisoning can occur by parasites spreading through food items. These parasites can remain in your digestive tract for a very long period. They can cause side effects in the body if they enter the intestine of people having a weak immunity.

How to Prevent Food Poisoning?

You need to ensure preventing food poisoning in several aspects. Here are some different scenarios you need to consider.

Prevent Food Poisoning When Shopping Grocery:

  • Do not buy food items that have crossed their expiry date.
  • Purchase hot and cold food at the end of your grocery shopping and put them in different bags.
  • Don’t purchase food if the package/container is swollen, leaking, dented or damaged.
  • Just like hot and cold foods, purchase meat, poultry and eggs at the end of your grocery shopping.
  • Once done with shopping, directly go to your home, so that raw foods do not spend much time out of the refrigerator.

Prevent Food Poisoning When Preparing Food:

  • Firstly, before you start anything, wash your hands with soap and water. Next, dry your hands properly, and then start preparing the food since wet hands are the vectors of bacteria.
  • Rinse all the fruits and vegetables in warm water.
  • Raw food items like chicken, eggs and meats should not get in touch with other food items on the countertop or anywhere in the kitchen.
  • Avoid using the same cutting board for raw food items that require cooking and ready-to-eat foods that can be served without cooking.
  • Once done with chopping, do not forget to wash the cutting board and knife with hot water and soap.
  • Do not let poultry, milk, eggs, meats, or seafood remain at room temperature for a long period.
  • Cook the food at a safe internal temperature.

Prevent Food Poisoning When Storing Food:

  • You need to store cooked dishes and raw foods separately. When you keep raw foods such as meat, chicken etc., separate from the other food items in the fridge, you prevent other food items from getting contaminated.
  • Keep the fridge temperature under 40 °C, and the freezer temperature at 0°C.
