The Omicron Variant: Symptoms of Omicron that You Must Know!
by Amit Vyas on Apr 21, 2022
The most concerning aspect about every new variant is the level of its severity and how fast the variant transmits. While a virus can have a higher transmission rate, its severity determines the mortality rate in people. The grade of severity is the most worrying factor of infection.
Having said that, we all know how the SARS-CoV-2 has created havoc globally with its variants. While some variants are highly infectious and threatening, some are low in severity. The Delta variant is considered to be a highly infectious one and triggers mild to moderate to severe symptoms in patients.
Now, the newest variant of Covid-19 – the Omicron variant has emerged with some differences in severity level, transmissibility, and symptoms. Here we will discuss what are the latest updates on the Omicron variant and what are its symptoms.

Here’s what the World Health Organization (WHO) has said about the Omicron Variant:
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently issued a warning that the highly transmissible Omicron variant is spreading at a rate not seen with any previous variant of Covid-19. Hence, stressing the matter that even if it causes less severe disease, the fast-growing number of cases could overwhelm unprepared health systems once again. While 77 countries have now reported Omicron cases, the reality is that Omicron is most likely present in most countries, even if it hasn’t been detected.
Omicron symptoms are ‘mild’ as yet.
Findings from South Africa imply that the Omicron variant has less severity than the Delta variant. All the cases reported for the Omicron variant have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic. However, it still remains unclear about the extent of severity of the Omicron variant.
All in all, since the beginning of the Omicron variant, there has been no report of severe illness. With this new strain having over 30 mutations, experts believe it will evade vaccine immunity, the reason why it’s spreading rapidly.
Below are the symptoms of the Omicron variant noted by the experts so far.
Like the prior variants of the Covid-19, the Omicron variant also leads to fatigue or excessive tiredness. You may experience too much fatigue, a low level of energy and a consistent desire to rest, which can lead to a disruption in your everyday life. However, if you feel exhausted, do not confirm being affected by Omicron without getting yourself tested. Fatigue can arise because of other reasons and health problems, too.
People contaminated with the Omicron expressed having a “scratchy” throat rather than a sore throat, which is a little bizarre. While the two may be alike, in some ways, the sore throat can be associated with throat irritation, while the scratchy throat is more painful and itchy. Often people try to alleviate a scratchy throat by coughing or scratching their tongue against the roof of their mouth.
From the outset of the Covid-19, mild or moderate fever has always been the most common symptom of the virus. While the fever from previous Covid-19 strains used to hang on to patients for a good number of days, the fever from the current Omicron variant causes mild fever, which goes away on its own. Fever has been one of the tell-tale signs of Covid-19, without any doubt.
Extreme body pain and night sweats
Dr Unben Pillay, the general practitioner from South Africa’s Department of Health, says that night sweat could be one of the indicative symptoms of the Omicron variant that can emerge at night. Night sweats refer to excessive sweating that wets your clothes and bed, even if you are sleeping in a cool place. Night sweats can also accompany lots of body pain. Body pain was a sign in previous strains, too, but it was not as common as cough or fever.
Dry cough was a common symptom in prior variants, and it’s a symptom in the new Omicron variant as well. People affected with the Omicron variant can suffer from dry cough. A dry cough is when you move out a hacking sound to remove any irritation in the throat of the airways
What are the Changes Noticed in the Symptoms of Omicron Variant?
Based on pieces of evidence, the new Omicron variant causes mild symptoms as opposed to the previous variants of the Covid-19. Like the prior variants, the Omicron variant does not show:
- Loss of smell or taste
- Stuffy nose
- Clogged nose
- High fever
Do Omicron Variant Re-infect People or Evade Vaccine Protection?
According to WHO, the new Omicron variant has higher transmissibility. Anyone infected with the virus before or who has been vaccinated fully stays at the risk of getting infected.
There were signs that vaccinated or previously infected people did not build enough antibodies to keep the infection from the Omicron variant at bay. Nonetheless, the global health agency has stated that this variant will be less severe in comparison to the Delta variant.
